If you struggle with creaky, achey shoulders, neck, and upper back, try this three step solution. First, try slow deep breaths along with this stretch. Sit tall. Lower your shoulders, keeping your right hand on the floor. Lean your head to the left and GENTLY hold your left hand on your head for added extension. Inhale. As you exhale, gently pull your head to toward your left shoulder. Hold for a count of 10. Release and repeat on the other side.
Next, heat may also help relax these muscles. You can use a heating pad or try soaking in a bath of hot water and 1-3 cups of Epsom Salt for 10-30 minutes.
Lastly, there is no separating emotional stress from physical pain. When you inhale, visualize all your worries, anxieties, and fears as one big ball in your body. Then imagine this ball of stress leaving your body with each exhale. Depending on the day, it may take 3, 5, or 10 breaths to break up the stress, but if you do this, you’re bound to feel your muscles relax.
