I lived many years in NYC as a single girl and solo on V-Day. No sympathy necessary. I learned quickly that for love and affection, I couldn’t wait for Mr. Right. And, as many of you know, even when you find a mate, he or she rarely gives us exactly what we want or expect.
Even now that I have a wonderful partner, I still need the following reminders to stay lovable. So here it is. My survival guide to staying fit, whole, and healthy on this Hallmark holiday.
1. Love Yourself
“If you don't love yourself, you can't love anybody else. And I think as women we really forget that.” Jennifer Lopez
Like you, I’ve heard this cliché so many times that it starts to lose its meaning. But there’s a reason it’s cited so often. Because it’s true. Until we feel worthy of our own care, concern, time, interest, why would we think someone else would be interested? In fact, we probably don’t believe someone loves us because we’re mired in our own insecurity and doubt. We also can’t show love to someone else because when we feel worthless, we’re not revealing our genuine self. So what do we do?
Be nice to yourself. The next time you’re about to critique your bloated belly or berate yourself for how many workouts you missed this week, stop. Would you say these words to a 5 year old? Don’t you deserve the same respect and compassion?
2. Dress Well
You don’t need an expensive or fancy wardrobe. Putting on a flattering top, painting your nails, or doing your hair goes a long way in showing you and the world how you feel about yourself.3. Muscle Up
Sweating through C3 Workouts not only gets our blood pumping, but there’s a certain energy and confidence that comes with developing muscle and building stamina. One workout at a time, we develop a routine. The result? Physically, we feel strong and powerful. Emotionally, we feel worthy and confident.4. Savor Your Valentine
Early in relationships, we get excited by every little thing our Love says and does. After we’ve been with each other for a while, we tend to take it all for granted. Today, notice those things again. How he kisses you good morning or offers to clean the snow off your car. How she snuggles her feet next to yours in bed just to know you’re there. Take in each other’s words and touches. Let go of expectations today and enjoy what comes.
5. Turn up the Heat
In the kitchen, that is. Cook a healthy meal that shows how much you love your body. Use the freshest ingredients from juicy tomatoes and firm zucchinis to bright sweet potatoes. Pick your protein, add some spice and then be sure to sit and savor your meal. No rushing. Need help? Check out our recipes.
Indulge in delicious dark chocolate for dessert.
6. Be Generous
We get a warm feeling inside when we do something special for someone else. Send a gift. Deliver a free coffee to your coworker’s desk. Leave flowers for a neighbor. Even better, don’t take the credit. Don’t do something for the accolades. Do it to genuinely make someone else’s day a little better. Give a little and you’ll be surprised how much you get in return.
7. Call Your Mom
No matter how I feel about myself, my title, my income, my dress size, or my food plan, my mom loves me unconditionally. When I get stuck on my flaws, she’s the first to point out my assets. Telling Mom, “I love you” reminds me to show gratitude for others and remember how precious it is to love another person. Is there someone in your life who needs a call? Who can you show a little love to today?Leave me comments and let me know how you’re feeling today.
Love to all,
