A new year feels like a new beginning. A chance to leave our disappointments behind and start fresh. But we have to be careful not to squander away that excitement by making lofty resolutions. A promise without a plan is a wish. And wishing doesn’t help our health or our confidence.
Does this mean we’re doomed? That we’ll never get healthy or fit or lose that annoying 10 pounds? No, but we have to try a different way. Look, I know how devastating it is to jump into extreme exercises only to get injured, waste money, and gain more weight back. That’s why I created the IMPACT System. Instead of resolving to control an outcome, follow these steps to focus on the process and you will be better off than you ever have.
Walk into any gym and a trainer will ask you, “What’s your goal?” We take a minute and think of all the things wrong with us that we want to change. Instead, your assignment is to write down what is right with you. Start with where you are now (thought starter, I AM: smart, hard-working, a walker, busy, willing to learn) then write what you’d like to add to that list in three months (thought starter, I AM: getting stronger, feeling more confident, seeing muscles I didn’t know I had, able to easily climb the stairs, do full-body push-ups). Put this list to the side and we’ll update it in April.
A major reason resolutions fail is that they represent promises without a plan. Whether you want to improve your stamina or tighten your tush, it won’t happen without a roadmap. We need a plan of action. What time of day works best for us to work out? Could we wake up 30 minutes earlier three times a week? Could we sacrifice half an hour from our TV time? How about picking out our workout clothes the night before so we set ourselves up for success?
Once you have the time and place, you need the routine. Join GrooveAnywhere.com for daily workouts to Get Cut, Build Cardio, and Strengthen Core. While many of us want to lose weight and get ripped, in our hearts, we still expect our efforts to fail. We believe the destructive voice in our head, telling us that the way we are now is the way we will always be. Instead, I’m asking you to take a leap of faith and tell yourself that you can have a healthy lifestyle and find peace with your body. Even if you’re not yet convinced, practice believing that exercise can be a natural part of your daily life and that you can be the healthy, beautiful you. Whatever we tell ourselves usually becomes our truth, so plant positive thoughts and focus your energy on working your action plan just for today.
Remember, these steps work together. The more we act on our plan, the more our confidence builds. We learn to trust ourselves and think differently. Our positive outlook allows us to lend support to others. We become the inspiration!
Follow this approach and you’ll be much further along in your journey toward health, strength and well-being.
Happy New Year!
